Terry's Thoughts April 2021
The question has been asked often lately “what does a true Christian look like?” If you have not heard this question lately, I am sure you will soon. What an awesome question to ask, especially now as we are beginning to truly come out of the pandemic and see even greater opportunities to be the church. Dr. Robert Stacy, a New Testament scholar, relates a story about the persecution of the young church in Philippi. It concerned how Christians were handling their responsibilities as believers under crushing persecution from Roman authorities. He indicated that while the situation was dire for the young church there was excitement in Paul’s letter because of the opportunities to share the gospel were growing even in the face of growing opposition. While we are not facing what the church in Philippi faced, we are experiencing difficult days both physically and spiritually, therefore, what a great time it is to advance the gospel. I have been inspired by Paul’s exhortations to Philippi lately and my awareness of the need for Jesus is higher than it has been in a long time. I recently had an encounter with a young man while riding in an Uber from my hotel to the airport while in Atlanta, earlier in March. He was relating that “he hoped he could get to heaven if he did more good things in life than bad.” The Lord prompted me to ask how he was sure this would work and through whom would he find assurance of his eternity. He suddenly became silent because he had no answer. The Lord prompted me again to share the gospel with a listening audience. While he did not accept Jesus, there in the car, he did allow me to pray for him just prior to getting out. My prayer is that Elliud will indeed join me in heaven because someone was faithful to water the seed planted that morning and hopefully someone will faithfully harvest his soul. Brothers and sisters the opportunities abound around us if we would but open our eyes to see.
Spring is upon us and Resurrection weekend is coming up soon. I love this time of year, especially as we see things open once again. In fact, the celebrations surrounding Resurrection weekend are the most important celebrations for all humans and especially the church. Are you ready? Will the world see Jesus through what we do? Is making Him known more important that Easter egg hunts or enjoying chocolate rabbits? While these things are certainly fun to participate in, let us remember it is much more important, to the church, what Jesus accomplished on the Cross and especially how He overcame death through His resurrection from the grave!
Please take time to review the events and opportunities described in this newsletter. Also take the time to investigate these opportunities and participate. It is an awesome thing to know Jesus and to be a part of the Body of Christ. Let us remember to love, pray for, and support each other regardless of what the world is doing. In fact, I say we should be the ones influencing the world with the love of Jesus rather than the world influencing us. Remember I love you and consider it an honor to serve the best association in our state.
